Project Overview

Client: A Leading International Agri-Business / Edible Oil Enterprise
Key Challenge: Frequent filter bag replacement caused by severe iron powder contamination in the process stream.
Solution: Custom Pre-Filtration System with Magnetic Separator

A major global edible oil producer approached CMI Filtration to improve filtration reliability within one of its production lines. The liquid medium contained a high concentration of fine ferrous particles, which rapidly overloaded the existing single-stage bag filtration system.

This resulted in frequent pressure rise, repeated bag changes, excessive maintenance labor, and unnecessary production interruptions.

Operational Challenges

  • Short filter bag service life
  • High consumable cost due to frequent replacements
  • Excessive maintenance downtime
  • Unstable process flow caused by differential pressure buildup
  • Reduced production efficiency

CMI Engineering Solution

After reviewing the operating conditions, our engineering team concluded that switching to finer micron bags would only accelerate clogging. Instead, we proposed a staged filtration strategy by introducing magnetic pre-filtration upstream of the bag filters.

A custom magnetic separator was designed using a basket-filter-inspired housing structure for strength, low pressure drop, and easy cleaning.

Technical Features

  • High-Gradient Magnetic Rods for maximum capture of fine iron contaminants
  • Low Pressure Drop Housing based on robust basket strainer architecture
  • Quick Cleaning Design for simplified maintenance routines
  • Food Grade Stainless Steel Construction for hygienic edible oil service

Field Result

During routine maintenance, a significant volume of iron powder was found captured on the magnetic rods before reaching the downstream filter bags.

This confirmed that the magnetic pre-filtration stage effectively removed the major contaminant load from the system.

  • Extended downstream filter bag lifespan
  • Reduced bag consumption and operating cost
  • Lower labor requirement for bag replacement
  • Improved process stability and uptime
  • Simple and cost-effective mechanical solution

Conclusion

At CMI Filtration, we focus on practical engineering solutions rather than unnecessary complexity. In this project, a simple magnetic pre-filtration upgrade delivered measurable cost savings and operational improvements for a leading edible oil producer.

The best filtration solution is not always the most expensive one — it is the one that fits the process best.
